Giving up sugar

After my big Easter candy blowout, and the way my jeans are feeling, I think it's time to cut out sugar for a week. I'm not going to get too hung up on food that has added sugar (my cereal that I snack on does), but I am going to focus on not eating the following:

  • Candy
  • Baked goods
  • Frozen yogurt (because I like to top it with junk)
  • Ice cream
I'm going to shoot for a week, and see if that helps reduce my cravings and just generally make me feel better. It's nuts, because I do not feel good after eating food that's not terribly healthy *cough - chicken strips & tater tots for lunch, bags of Easter candy, chips*, but I still occasionally succumb. I tend to really struggle when Michael is out of town & I'm home alone with the kids (which is happening this week & next), so now feels like the right time to work on this.

I was supposed to get up at 5:00 am to run on the treadmill, but I got about three hours of sleep last night. They were working on a massive, multi-year construction project right outside our house, and the trucks were particularly loud last night, & kept waking up the kids. No fun. I am currently having green tea & feeling like a zombie. I *will* run today, so I'll need to be creative about when I fit that in.

You know who else enjoyed candy this weekend? These little cuties. I kept trying to take pictures, and mouths were always full! :-) Note the chocolate on Sam's face, and Nick's chewing.

How about you? Have you ever given up sugar? How long did it take before you stopped craving it?

  1. Ugh, i don't do good on three hours of sleep, hope you get better sleep tonight. I gave up sugar in january and did really good, i should do it again. i think I am pretty over sweetened right now, and not in a good way!

    1. I'm so tired today, that I'm glad I already blogged about giving up sugar. Otherwise, I surely would have eaten sugar all day long to get me through! Public shame for the win.

  2. 3 hours of sleep is MISERABLE. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that!

I probably need to cut out sugar too. I'm sure my jeans would thank me.

    1. I will be doing the biggest happy dance ever when they finish the construction. Some nights it doesn't bother us, but other nights? You just lay awake & listen to the sound of construction and dump trucks right outside your window. It's . . . awesome. ;)

    1. That is awesome - I never win anything. :-) I just emailed you!

I want to go with a moderate approach, but right now, I'm having such bad cravings that I'm trying to break that first. good luck to you!

  4. Don't make any serious decisions on little sleep... Haha
    Miserable!
I eat so well except for chocolate. I did the Whole30 challenge and it was at about 24 days when I finally didn't need massive snacking. It's definitely a struggle, good luck to you!! I totally understand the tired mom, feeling chunky in my jeans feeling! Good news, the kids grow up. Bad news, the kids grow up.

    1. So true - I'm thinking I'm going to opt for sleep over running tonight. Such a battle.

I like chocolate, but not as much as I like Starburst & Skittles. 24 DAYS?! You're killing me. :-) I'm just getting over the sleep deprived phase, but I would like to stop feeling chunky in my jeans. That would be some serious progress. :-)
